Javascript/OpenSocial Developer for Advancing Biomedical Research (SOMA / south beach)

Fri, 07/30/2010 - 16:31
Social networking technology is being rapidly absorbed to solve real world problems in the enterprise and public sector. Open solutions to networking may have enough momentum to become de rigueur. Become a part of the movement.

Background
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has recently deployed an open source application called Profiles (http://profiles.ucsf.edu) created at Harvard that allows biomedical researchers to leverage social networks to enhance scientific discovery and research (‘research networking’). We are working with Harvard to extend Profiles by making it an OpenSocial container via Apache Shindig. With Profiles already being adopted by >10 other academic biomedical institutions, our vision is to provide maximal benefit to each such institution by developing and sharing gadgets that enable research productivity, creativity and collaborations. Because research needs are in some cases similar to enterprise needs (e.g. collaborating on documents) there is also the possibility of extending OpenSocial gadgets that already exist. Our goal is to establish, prove the benefits of and promote an open, gadget strategy as the model for continued innovation in research networking tools.

Our Needs
We need a strong Front End developer to build/find/modify the gadgets that will make Profiles shine and showcase the power of social networking to further scientific research and health.
Goals
• The developer will be responsible for producing OpenSocial gadgets to enhance UCSF Profiles.
• In addition to building/finding/modifying gadgets the developer will help define, prioritize and plan the functionality that these gadgets will deliver.
• Profiles is being deployed at many institutions and we want to give back to the community. Whenever possible we need to make these gadgets transportable to other Profiles installations, or even more broadly any OpenSocial compliant installation (there are many!).

Skills and Technology
• Very strong web front end development skills: JavaScript, HTML, XML, CSS required.
• Strong server side skills in the language of your choice! We currently run .NET, PHP and Java but we are open to Ruby or Python or anything else that will solve our needs.
• Knowledge of SQL. MySQL/SQL Server 2005.
• Familiar with Web 2.0 and social networking application design and deployment best practices..
• Prior experience in building social networking apps and/or Google Gadgets is a very big plus.
• Passion for engaging users and a strong usability and interface design aesthetic also a big plus.
• Confident in working with a mix of languages and architecturally strong enough to identify and justify the best technical approach.

Graphic Designer Needed to Create Banner Ads and Landing Pages

You need to be:

--Proficient in Photoshop
--Fast learner
--Flash experience preferred but not required
--PHP and Javascript experience a major plus
--Works well under deadline situations
--Able to mass produce variations of ads quickly

--Just out of school is ok if you have the right attitude and are willing to learn. Again, this can very easily turn into a full time position.
