Web designer for educational startup (palo alto)
We are an early start-up company developing web-based educational software in the SaaS (cloud) model. We are using a LAMP development platform with Adobe Flash Builder to create a rich Internet application (RIA) with cross-platform capability.
The core application is an electronic flashcard program. It can accommodate any type of data that could be put on a traditional flashcard, but without the limitations. In addition to flat text, it is a fully interactive multimedia application employing whatever tools will enhance the learning experience, such as graphics, video, audio, animation, hyperlinks, and dynamic help text. We sometimes refer to it as flashcards on steroids.
The application features an innovative drill algorithm that maximizes retention and minimizes drill time. It has been shown to be effective on subjects as diverse as vocabulary, geography, history, multiplication tables, and trivia.
The range and number of subjects is unlimited. Each subject is managed by an expert in that field who is responsible for the content and structure. Each subject is largely independent with its own particular requirements with respect to data and presentation.
All of the disparate subjects are to be integrated into a common UI/UX that is as consistent as possible while maintaining the distinctive character of each subject. The UI allows each user to choose which subjects they want to study, gives them some control over how the material is presented, and provides some feedback on how they are doing.
The application was originally developed as a single-user, desktop application. That was Version 1. In Version 2, currently under development, we are porting it to a web-based (SaaS) application where all of the code and data reside on our servers. The users only need a userid, a supported browser, and an Internet connection. Version 2 also contains significant additional functionality. Our objective is to Version 2 fully operational as soon as possible so that we can start collecting user data and experience. We will then begin work on Version 3, which will be the first full production release.
Job Overview
We have an engineering prototype of Version 2 running on our server. The UI was designed to test the application and demonstrate functionality. We are looking for an experienced web designer to create a professional, elegant, entertaining, and intuitive UI/UX that will highlight the power of the application.
The web designer will be responsible for the design and implementation of the application UI/UX and for integrating it into the rest of the application. The web designer will be part of the core product design team that includes development engineers, subject editors, and management.
The UI/UX should attract and engage new users, entertain and stimulate existing users, unlock the power of the application, and enhance the learning experience for all users. We are looking for a user experience that is fun, while being tasteful and professional. It needs to appeal to all ages from middle school to adult. The UI will make use of all aspects of a rich Internet application graphics, audio, video, animation, dynamic help text, hover-over pop-up panels, and anything else that will make the application more interesting. Later releases will incorporate games, puzzles, contests, forums, discussion groups, wikis, and other mechanisms to enhance the learning experience.
We need both higher-level UX design expertise (web design, human factors) and lower-level graphics arts expertise. If we cannot find one person who can do both, preference will be given to applicants with the higher-level design and human factors skills who can identify and manage people who can do the lower-level work.
Responsibilities
The web designer position will encompass the following responsibilities:
- Responsible for the UI/UX design, definition, strategy, documentation, and deliverables.
- Member of the core application development team.
- Ensuring that the UI/UX is implemented, shipped, and maintained as defined by the development team.
- Understanding the philosophy and spirit of the application its needs, goals, and users.
- Working with the development engineers to Integrate the UI into the existing application structure (Flash Builder).
- Working closely with the subject editors to fully understand the requirements of each subject, advising the subject editors regarding human factors options, and incorporating the results into the overall design.
- Making artistic and human factors decisions and recommendations regarding the appropriate use of graphics, audio, video, animation, and other RIA media and effects.
- Making human factors decisions and recommendations regarding the layout of the screens and the position and interaction of user controls.
- Designing tasteful and appropriate user feedback controls and devices that will increase user interest and satisfaction.
- Designing a UI/UX that is simple and intuitive. An average user should be able to start using the application immediately (or after only simple instruction) and not require help from customer support.
- Creating the graphics for the various pages or identifying and managing subcontractors.
- Researching and assessing competing applications and ensuring that our UI is at least competitive if not superior.
- Maintaining complete and accurate documentation.
- Writing or helping to write user instructions and tutorials.
- Making use of standard design techniques and tools.
- Performing thorough testing to ensure a robust and reliable application.
- Being an informed and vocal advocate for the users with the development team.
- Collaborating with the entire product team to keep the UI/UX closely synchronized with constantly evolving design philosophies.
- Understand educational software and applications and ensuring that our UI/UX conforms to accepted standards and practices.

The UI/UX is to meet or exceed these requirements and objectives:
- A professional UI/UX that is engaging and interesting and that captures and holds the users attention.
- A human factors design that is intuitive, natural, and efficient.
- A look and feel that is consistent across all of the subjects, while providing each subject editor with enough customization to make that subject distinctive and serve the needs of the users.
- The ability to use the application either with a mouse, pointing device, or touch screen or from the keyboard alone.
- The ability for the user to assign personalized shortcut keys for some or all functions.
