Director of Engineering for Large-scale, Web Services Startup

Wed, 06/16/2010 - 16:18
Want to join a stealth Web company at the beginning of the story? Our CEO is recognized as one of the Web's most successful entrepreneurs, supported by a highly experienced early-stage team, and backed by an amazing roster of A-list investors. If you know what it means to work in a startup, if you want an opportunity to shape rather than inherit a corporate culture, and if you can prove you've got the chops, we want you at the table.

As Director of Engineering at this fast-paced and dynamic startup, you will be called on to wear many hats. You'll need to get your hands dirty. You will need to rely on your proven experience in building and leading effective teams. You will be foundational to the company's rapid growth and market success, as you guide your teams to success in delivering world class software for our core functionality and Web services that are fast, scalable, reliable, and secure.

You'll take responsibility for growing several development teams into a highly productive engineering machine. You'll hire and mentor a variety of skill sets, empower individuality, and govern best practices along the way. You will oversee development teams in a Agile (or Agile-like) environment, and will play a key role in the selection and adoption of processes, tools, and practices.

Deep experience using Agile development practices to build and deploy large-scale, consumer-facing Web sites built on a Service Oriented Architecture is required. Other necessary experiences include management of development teams of 10-30 members; working knowledge of Python, Java, MySQL, PHP, and JS; familiarity with and openness to modern inter-service communication methods, NoSQL trends, queuing technologies, and unit-testing frameworks; and successful management of integrations with a variety of third-party APIs. Experience in the online advertising industry will be valuable.

At our company, the standard "outstanding written and oral communication skills" is more than lip service. Our team is geographically distributed and you will work from your own (home) office. To survive you'll need to excel at remote collaboration, unfailingly express yourself in voice, chat, and asynchronous text communications, and exceed all expectations of productivity while doing so. As a prominent leader, you'll need the patience and insight to bring out these qualities in your team members and motivate them to their fullest potential.

We're looking for a superstar that will help shape our growing culture. To get past our spam filter, send your resume, a list of anywhere we might find your work (twitter, blog, open source, published sources, etc.) or recommendations, and tell us why you're the right person for *this* job.

Polymathic Media needs a programmer/developer! (Chicagoland)

Tue, 06/15/2010 - 13:33
NOTE: if you're fresh out of school or looking for more experience, you are what we need -- really advanced programmers won't find the work they want with us. As long as you can handle html and css, we can train you to work with Wordpress.

Howdy almighty programmers and developers!

Polymathic Media, polymathicmedia.com, is looking for someone who (obviously) is quick with html and css and javascript (preferably jQuery) but ideally, can manipulate PHP and therefore become a hardcore Wordpress-as-CMS (especially with 3.0 coming out) person, if you're not already. We are pretty dedicated to WP for the sort of projects we do, which tend to be small and medium businesses, nonforprofits, etc.

If you can write PHP from scratch obviously that's amazing, but if it's your focus, the position we are recruiting for is probably going to bore you. But, a computer science person would really round us out, so I'm open to it. So, let's get to it… Polymathic need:

1. HTML/css/javascript (preferably jQuery)/CMS comfortability, not scared of PHP, etc etc
2. Preferably you are already a freelancer who is looking to add more work to your schedule. This could turn into full time but as we are a fairly new startup, we have to figure that out as we go along. We are in the process of acquiring a dedicated video crew, though, so soon we will be one of the only production studios in Chicago that has the whole spectrum of web development, branding, print/publication, photography and video. Yeah, if that sounds tasty, you're a good fit. We're also starting to get bigger and bigger clients so that's equally tasty.
3. You need to be able to work at the hourly rate the rest of us currently receive, unless you're a PHP specialist, but we'd need to talk about this. We specialize in quick turnaround, so we do tons of projects and money's never a problem.
4. You're not a great designer. "WHAT??!!" you're asking? Well, the way we do things is a developer is paired with a great designer who comps up sites for you and sends you PSDs and various asset files. The site map and information architecture is already laid out for you, by me (Marcy, studio manager and head developer). You translate the design to wordpress and then implement functionality through plugins and PHP manipulation. Once our iphone-app stuff picks up (web based apps) you'd get to design functionality, too. If you are a pretty good designer (ie., I come from a photography/video/design background I just know I'm never destined to truly be a graphic designer, I just embrace any skills as a foundation for development) that's only going to help you.

That's about it. Please be local, as one of my designers already is temporarily telecommuting from Milwaukee and it gives me headaches.

For spamirific reasons, go to our site and grab my email from there, and use the subject line "Polymathic Recruitment: (Your Name)"… you should have a site of some sort to send me, resume is not necessarily important so much as your ability to fit into our current workflow.

Peace out, smart people! Looking forward to hearing from you!
