Great PT/side-gig opportunity for an up-and-coming Ruby geek. (WFH)
I'm not a recruiter or a suit trying to stack up keywords so I hope you still find me, I think you'll be happy you did. This is a *paid* gig, it's not an internship so don't draw that conclusion from what follows. On a similar note, just because I'm offering someone the chance to step it up I wouldn't expect you to be able to learn ruby on the job and keep up...
I'm a respected web geek putting together a team of contract geeks to feed loads of work to... no kidding. I'm hiring for a pet project, which I'm using as an initial product launch for the company, to be presented in October at the Mountain.rb conference in Boulder, of which I am a sponsor, and launched 11/15 at Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. You'll be working with some really talented devs, but you'll also be given the chance to step up a notch or two and show you can hack it. As a bonus, based on technical contribution, one Rails hacker on the project will actually get to make a short presentation at Mountain.rb.
Again, this is a paid gig, it'll be about 150 hours of work over the next two months (mostly in September) & 40 hours in the first two weeks of November (with the chance to join the crew for more lucrative client gigs thereafter.)
You'll mostly work at home, but plan on a couple of weekly skype meetings and a face to face brunch in SF on Sunday with the other cohorts.
Please send me an email with a little bit about what sites you like, what technologies excite you, your LinkedIn profile or PDF resume, a couple of links to projects you've worked on, and a code sample. We can set up a phone/face-to-face interview from there.

Javascript/OpenSocial Developer for Advancing Biomedical Research (SOMA / south beach)
Background
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has recently deployed an open source application called Profiles (http://profiles.ucsf.edu) created at Harvard that allows biomedical researchers to leverage social networks to enhance scientific discovery and research (research networking). We are working with Harvard to extend Profiles by making it an OpenSocial container via Apache Shindig. With Profiles already being adopted by >10 other academic biomedical institutions, our vision is to provide maximal benefit to each such institution by developing and sharing gadgets that enable research productivity, creativity and collaborations. Because research needs are in some cases similar to enterprise needs (e.g. collaborating on documents) there is also the possibility of extending OpenSocial gadgets that already exist. Our goal is to establish, prove the benefits of and promote an open, gadget strategy as the model for continued innovation in research networking tools.
Our Needs
We need a strong Front End developer to build/find/modify the gadgets that will make Profiles shine and showcase the power of social networking to further scientific research and health.
Goals
The developer will be responsible for producing OpenSocial gadgets to enhance UCSF Profiles.
In addition to building/finding/modifying gadgets the developer will help define, prioritize and plan the functionality that these gadgets will deliver.
Profiles is being deployed at many institutions and we want to give back to the community. Whenever possible we need to make these gadgets transportable to other Profiles installations, or even more broadly any OpenSocial compliant installation (there are many!).
Skills and Technology
Very strong web front end development skills: JavaScript, HTML, XML, CSS required.
Strong server side skills in the language of your choice! We currently run .NET, PHP and Java but we are open to Ruby or Python or anything else that will solve our needs.
Knowledge of SQL. MySQL/SQL Server 2005.
Familiar with Web 2.0 and social networking application design and deployment best practices..
Prior experience in building social networking apps and/or Google Gadgets is a very big plus.
Passion for engaging users and a strong usability and interface design aesthetic also a big plus.
Confident in working with a mix of languages and architecturally strong enough to identify and justify the best technical approach.
